Both don't force students to be there (open schools don't even have specific hours, they're open and you can come and go as you please). Democratic schools allow children to be part of the rule making process, judgement system and decide what they and only they want to study. The results are staggeringly positive and honestly, better than the common factory model in every way. It's not even pricy.Amarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15476262565297238693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5887694634902206469.post-782120179846103942015-06-06T16:27:49.867-07:002015-06-06T16:27:49.867-07:00One thing I've learned is that the absolute wo...One thing I've learned is that the absolute worst thing to do is repress a person. I think one thing that school has done better than anything at is repressing people's interests. People are taught what is "important" but this prevents people from being able to shine and actually really prosper. People are never allowed to be themselves, and if they do, they face the threat of punishment. Worse, school is also a breeding place for bullying unfortunately.

I'd really like a place where instead of people being scared, people are actually felt welcome. I don't think I've ever been in a school where everyone feels welcome.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5887694634902206469.post-41665113010446851552015-06-06T15:58:20.371-07:002015-06-06T15:58:20.371-07:00Sorry...the Catalyst site is at CatalystLearning.n...Sorry...the Catalyst site is at CatalystLearning.netAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07726709637632813532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5887694634902206469.post-90506175465516434852015-06-06T15:57:41.150-07:002015-06-06T15:57:41.150-07:00Thank you for your comment, Kellen! Catalyst is committed to self-directed learning, as done by centers like North Star Teens in Mass. and Open Road in Portland Oregon.

Take a look at the Catalyst site...this is the other half of what Catalyst wants to do: give kids a way out of school if they need it.

I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on system-building!
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07726709637632813532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5887694634902206469.post-27740349381461213262015-06-06T13:23:36.301-07:002015-06-06T13:23:36.301-07:00Nice post, Jorge. Once we identify the fallacies (bullshit) in the factory model and realize it is a complete waste of time, we have to create a new system that liberates and is very effective. We cannot destroy the old system without having a better one to take its place. Think of how people flee from Internet Explorer to to Firefox or Chrome. Do you have any ideas for creating a better system? I think you'd make a great teacher. Half the battle is not buying into the BS or compromising just to collect your paycheck.
